Boise Airport Awarded $74M in Federal Grants for Infrastructure Projects
Boise Airport has been awarded three Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants totaling $74 million to support critical airfield infrastructure improvements that will enhance safety, increase operational efficiency and prepare the airport for continued growth.
"Boise is honored to receive these FAA grants, which will help advance three key infrastructure projects as our airport continues to support our region's growth," said Boise Mayor Lauren McLean. "These grants are one of the many ways that we pursue strategic funding opportunities, investing in infrastructure that supports the services and quality of life Boiseans enjoy."
Two discretionary Airport Improvement Program grants totaling $64.3 million will help offset the cost of the airport's ongoing runway reconstruction project, while a third $9.6 million Airport Infrastructure Grant will fund the second phase of construction on the aircraft apron for the future Concourse A. Together, these investments will strengthen the airport's ability to serve the rapidly growing Treasure Valley and the broader region.
"The runways and airfield are the most critical pieces of infrastructure at an airport," said Beth Sumner, Boise Airport deputy director of engineering. "While they may not be as visible as a new terminal, these investments ensure Boise Airport can continue to safely and efficiently serve the Treasure Valley and the entire region for decades to come."
The largest grant, $59.4 million, will support the reconstruction of one of the airport's two parallel runways. Construction began in March and is expected to take place over two construction seasons.
Although airport runways are typically designed with a 20-year service life, this runway has remained in service for nearly 40 years since its last reconstruction. A full reconstruction, rather than rehabilitation, was necessary to address drainage issues beneath the pavement.
A second grant of $4.9 million will fund the installation of a runway visual guidance system on the reconstructed runway, including centerline lighting that will help pilots maintain a safe, stabilized approach during landing.
The third grant, $9.6 million, will complete construction of the south side of the aircraft apron for the future Concourse A. The first phase of the apron project began in 2025 and created additional overnight aircraft parking positions. The second phase is now underway. These new parking spaces will allow more aircraft to be positioned for early morning departures and create greater flexibility for airlines to expand air service to the region.
Passenger traffic at Boise Airport has increased 81% since 2014, with more than 5 million travelers passing through the airport in 2025. As Idaho's primary commercial airport, Boise Airport plays a vital role in supporting tourism, business development and the state's economy.
